An Innocent Aboard

In 1950, Warwick Thomson, just turned sixteen, had his wish of serving in the merchant navy fulfilled when he was appointed a "peggy" in a steamship on its way from Auckland to Scotland. This is a fascinating and amusing account of his experiences on board, with all the different types of seamen he lived with for many weeks. He later went on to a successful career as an officer.
